Barrier coat?

We are considering the purchase of a new Catalina 350. The dealer is telling us that with the new composition used that blisters are very rare and that a barrier coat is not necessary unless we want to add one. Has anyone had experience with blisters on a late model Catalina?

Me too

I am also considering purchasing a new Catalina 400. It will be kept in fresh water. Speaking with a dealer, they didn't feel it was necessary.

Might Even Void your Warranty

If I recall correctly (I've been wrong before) adding a barrier coat to a new Catalina might just void the 5 year blister warranty that Catalina has standard with all their boats. Check for yourself, and don't believe everything a dealer says - even a good one. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Boat bottoms and paint.

The new materials used to build boats today are much better at stopping blisters. I would ask the factory tech rep at Catalina for a "the buck stops here" answer. If they say it's OK then make your choise. I would do it. While he is on the line ask about bottom paint and the primmer that should be used for your type of sailing and location. There are so many different opinions that the factory is the best straight answer. Our 10 year old IP 38 had a barrier (6) applied followed by a primmer and then bottom paint 10 years before we bought it and had bottom paint every 18 months. It had been accross the Alantic twice and spent approx. 6 years in the Carribean and the bottom was perfect. Our 5 year old Hunter 26 did not and had a factory blister job done under warrenty. Ray
