Barrier Coat Systems

Interlux InterProtect 2000E vs. Pettit Protect 4700/4701
Has anyone had experience with the Pettit product ? It would be cheaper and less labor extensive, but is it a good product? I have used the Interlux in the past but am looking for less labor extensive product.

I'm going to use the Pettit. After reading all of the instructions, it seems to be more forgiving in application regarding time between coats and top coating with the anti-fouling and like you said less expensive. I won't be doing this until April though, so if you use it before then I'd like to hear what you thought about it. We got another 12 inches of snow last night :cry:,

Barrier coats

The labor intensive part is the prep work, rolling on the barrier is easy in comparison.

Pettit requires 12 mil dry film thickness and Interprotect 2000E requires 10 mills. The problem with overly thick barrier coats that apply in "less coats", Interprotect 3000e will also apply in less coats, is that they apply to thick and can be tough to get a smooth finish with and they tend to leave roler ridges or lumps.

Pettit requires roughly three coats to get to 12 mills and IP2KE about 4 or 5. Personally I like the way IP2KE applies better. With IP2KE you can apply four or five coats, plus paint with no sanding of lumps or orange peel..

These are both excellent products but I personally prefer IP2KE for ease of application. Both products require a dry hull. The tech reps at Interlux define this a .25% moisture or less..

I used the Pettit products in spring 2008. It seemed to be easy to mix and apply and the paint stuck well to it. It's only been a few years so I can't really comment on how well it protects the hull, but so far so good. I don't know what was on the boat before, but large chunks of bottom paint (some with barrier coat attached, some without) would chip off. No problems since the old paint was removed, and the barrier coat and new antifouling applied.

I bough the Pettit stuff on sale and saved about $200 over the cost of the interlux.

I prefer the Interprotect 2000E... Also, since it comes in two colors, the application can be simplified quite a bit, where you have boatstands and such to paint around.

I don't race so I did not spend a lot of time perfecting the bottom. I can say that the Pettit finish was pretty smooth.

I used Sea Hawk Tuff Stuff Marine Epoxy last summer. It was recommended to me by a boatyard that has been using it for years. It is similiar to Pettit. You only need a couple coats compared to the 2000. I acutally did the application in two days. I painted the first coat of epoxy in the early morning, 2nd coat in early afternoon, and the first coat of bottom paint later that first day. Followed up with the 2nd coat of bottom paint the next day. I call Sea Hawk before and they gave me the proper application. Apparently, a lot of boat manufacturers use the sea hawk system. I could not find it in any store, but bought it online.
