Barrier Coat, Bilge, Keel, and sink intake

I know there has been a discussion on barrier coats before, but I
would like some feedback from those that did not put on a barrier
coat. Has there been any adverse results,ie blisters or boatpox? I
have removed all the paint down to the gelcoat. There are no
blisters, just a few small holes made from the pressure washer I
used. Seems to me if there haven't been any blisters in 35 years,
that a barrier coat isn't needed. Any real feedback would be
appreciated. Just because the boat yard or the salesman says it is
needed doesn't make it so.

Another side note, I removed the fuel tank from the bilge and
cleaned up that mess below the old tank. I am putting a new tank in
the left cockpit lazarette. Now I have all this empty space in the
bilge. Any ideas what to do with it?

Also, there was a crack on the bottom of the keel, full length. It
was a pain in the neck to fix -- literally, but I think I have it
licked. I ground the crack out with a grinder and filled it with
epoxy, cabosil, and glass fibers, then a final cover of epoxy and
glass cloth wrapped 2in up the side of the keel on both sides.
Hopefully that will take care of it.

Why is the salt water inlet for the sink towards the stern and on
the same side as the poop discharge? Thats like having your head up
your ___ ???? Sorry, but that makes absolutely no sense to me.

Hi Larry

I applied an expoxy barrier to Southenr Comfort because I had the use of
a heated factory for a winter, would never do it again! Loads of work
and no real advantage... My own opinion.

Sounds like you have the split licked! I have the same but mine is only
about one foot long.. Will do it this winter and ensure the boat is
higher than usual in her cradle.

I have also removed my keel fuel tank and put a stainless one in the
starboard locker, works a treat. I made it so it follows teh contour of
teh hull and fits perfectly. Made a spare one at teh same time so if
anyone is interested.....

Ref. the salt-water inlet, I took mine out and glassed it in. If I want
salt-water then I will use a bucket! Not teh same bucket that I
sometimes use for other purposes!!

Cheers

Larry,
For a good disertation on barrier coats go to

If you go to the main page of the forum
click on "Search" and type in 'Barrier coats' you'll get a lot of
info. The forum is hosted by a marine surveyor/boat restoration
person extrodinaire, Tim Lackey.

The general consensus is that if you don't have blisters now you're
not going to get them. I stripped mine to the gel coat and there were
no blisters. I put on two good coats of antifouling.

The bilge cavity would make a great wine storage area :)

My salt water inlet was on the port side. It's now glassed over. That
pump now draws water from a 5 gallon drinking water bottle in the
port locker.
