Just pulled the boat and have a huge harvest of barnicles ob the prop and shaft. Has anyone come up with a good anti-fouling paint for the prop and shaft?

I've tried a few

My all time favorite anti-fouling for the prop and shaft were the tin-based spray-on outdrive paints. They worked well for me and were easy to use. The EPA has taken those off the shelves, so I'll have to go to my back-up that has worked well in the past. After cleaning the shaft & prop, I put on two coats of Interlux Intercoat, followed by a good coat of my usual bottom paint (Trinidad). The barrier coat seems to isolate the copper in the paint from the metal of the shaft, keeping it active. By the end of the season, most of the paint has worn off the prop but the amount of growth is minimal if you use the boat frequently. Be careful not to coat your shaft zincs.

Regular Ablative Bottom Paint

I always use regular bottom paint on the exposed shaft, strut and prop. (NEVER on or under the zincs). I have used Micron CSC for 10 years and probably will continue to do so. I sand is off each spring before applying a new coat. Barnacles will wreak their wrath upon any unprotected bottom appendages and cause severe propulsion problems.

Bottom Paint

I agree with John. The best is no longer available. Interlux Intercoat plus your favorite bottom paint should do a pretty good job. The leading edge of the prop blades will loose their protection soonest. The shaft will be protected the entire season. As for bottom paint, Micron CSC is OK. Big problem with it is that it is sooo soft, highly toxic to apply and costs a ton. This year I used a water based ablative that is much harder than CSC and works better ...and the price can't be beat, $100 for a 2 gallon pail. I've added a link to the site of the manufacturer

Bob, I use Desitiin on all the bright work...

below the waterline. I rub in two thick coats on the prop and shaft. It's good for at least a year. When I hauled the boat this year (two years) to bottom paint there was a small amount of marine life on the prop and shaft. A diver can put it on for you rather than hauling the boat. The stuff really works. Yes, the same as you use on a baby's bottom, even floating babies. Terry
