Looking for local knowledge for entering Fire Island Inlet on the way to Block Island. Anything unusual to look out for? Current? Water Depth? Also, a good, fairly quiet, place to anchor or tie up that is relatively close to the inlet once inside. Thanks, PAT

Good choice of inlets

The Coast Guard moves the bouys to match the channel as shoaling occurs. The shoaling usually occurs on the eastern side just inside the point. The current runs up to about 2.5 knots just inside the point. There really are no good places to anchor nearby, go under the bridge and pull in close to the Coast Guard station, there will still be some current here, whichj could be a problem, The nearest marina is Captree Boat Basin, I don't know if they have transient slips, there's no mooring there. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Thanks Bob

Appreciate the information. I havn't had a chance to look at the charts yet. I'll be entering with a mast height of 55 feet and a draft of 4.5'. We will be in transit from the Chesapeake to points north. The Fire Island Inlet would allow the Barnegat to Block portion of the cruise to be broken up into two, more or less, equal segments, thus avoiding the "jet lag" of running the rum line. I am quite use to the infamous Barnegat Inlet, however, I have heard that Fire Island Inlet can also be a problem. Any information you would care to send will be a big help. You can email me directly if you wish at: captainpat@prodigy.net Thanks, PAT

SEEMS LIKE OLE TIMES

WHEN I LEFT FOR FLORIDA, I REVERSED YOU SCHEDULE, WHEN YOU COME INTO THE INLET, THERE ARE MANY PLACES TO STAY ON THE HOOK, ON THE FIRE ISLAND SIDE OF THE BAY,AND IN BAYSHORE AND ISLIP, THERE ARE MARINA'S THAT WILL ACCOMODATE YOU ON A DAILY BASIS, WITH GOOD SHOPPING LOCALLY.

Thanks Tom

Would you be kind enough to supply me with some of the anchoring locations in a bit more detail. Specifically, anchorages that are not far from the inlet, since we would have to get as quick a start as possible the following day. Upon checking the chart I see an area immediately to the left after entering. It is labled as Oak Beach. It looks protected. How's the bottom, current, etc. I also see a boat basin near the CG station but on the south side of the bridge. Can I tie up at the CG station? Thanks, PAT

When are you going to Block

Pat, Just curious, when are you making this trip? My wife and I are going to Block for the Beneteau rondezvous the weekend of July 20th. Just wondering if we will be going the same time? John
