Whats the sailing like in barnegat bay and what about marina's and boat slips are they hard to find. I am thinking of relocating to lesure village when I retire because of the lower cost of living but what about the cost keeping a sail boat and any info will be appreciated.

Nick, I don't know what the costs are on LI, but I'd hazard a guess that they're kinda steep compared to the central Jersey shore. We keep our H23 at Good Luck Point, near the mouth of the Toms River. Cost there is 60 bucks /foot for the summer season. Once you go north of there, I hear the prices increase dramatically. I feel that more sailing activity exists south of Seaside Heights, since the bay is generally deeper, and there are no bridges to deal with en route to the inlet. If you're interested, drop me a line (ocrc@litenet.net) and pay us a visit; I'll be happy to show you around! Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass EttIII

Barnegat Bay Sailing

Marinas are plentiful at Barnegat, we keep our Hunter 26.5 at Mariners Marina, in Barnegat, NJ. They cater to sailboats, and my slip runs around $1800. for the season (May to Nov). They have a beautiful clubhouse, and are a full service marina. As far as sailing here, certain sections can be shallow (south towards the LBI bridge), but the bay is big and plenty of open waters. If you need any other info., feel free to email me at shopda@fast.net.

Just Curious

When you talk about a price of $50/foot, is that a month, a season? For a 30 footer, that is $1500. That seems too high for a month, although I suspect that is what you are talking about, and too little for a season. I won't say what I pay, which I consider too much, but it is a lot less that what most of you pay. Actually I will say. I pay $450 a year for the end of a dock.

I hate to say it

but it's great! That is why the slip prices go up 10 bucks a year!

Thanks all

I pay $50 ft per season with water and electric not at a marina and thats cheap compared to marinas on long Island which all have a long waiting list. When I get some free time after boating season I will be visiting friends at leisure village and checking some marinas too. Thank You Nick s/v SEADADDLER

Barnegat

Nick, Barnegat is a great place. One thing you might want to think about is what you are used to. I figure, being on LI Sound, you typically have many cruising destinations. Barnegat Bay tends to be shallow, with limited cruising stops. You didn't say what size boat you have. The larger the boat, the more your sailing will mostly be going off shore through the inlet. 2001-290

I have a 2001-290 hunter and really don't sail much in long island sound instead all of sailing is done in the peconic bay. I get to go around robins island and shelter island and sag harbor, greenport, montauk ,I have not made it to block island yet I am still working full time. I love long island and hope to sail more of the north east when I retire. I was thinking barnegat bay is not too far to make the trip to long island in a 340, 356,36 hunter what do you think. nick

Nick......

You've got the best sailing grounds in the Northeast out there on the Peconic! We were out Tuesday evening - made up to 6.5 knots in Huntington Bay - yee haa! Gregg

Try it first

Barnegat bay offers some decent, protected sailing, but I doubt it will compare to what you are used to. So make sure you try it before you buy it. Ron Mehringer Hydro-Therapy

Time to LI Sound

whether your in a 340 or 420, the time to LI Sound from Barnegat Bay would be the same. If you go around the clock, you can make it in less than 24 hours. If you want to do it in daylight, one leg will get you to Atlantic Highlands, NJ, the next day would get you to the Sound via the East River. You could also go straight around offshore, which would be a 24 hour trip. Also, as you get a larger boat, with deeper draft, Barnegat Bay becomes smaller (less areas to navigate due to shallow water), and you will be mostly daysailing offshore. Rp.

Hi Gregg

I was out sailing around shelter island last saturday and sunday and boy with two reefs in, the boat was heeling like crazy but the crew(all guys)had a ball. Took the wife out sunday same thing two reefs but kept it from heeling and she really enjoyed being at the helm. I do some racing on a friends boat during the week out of mt.sini harbor and north or south or in between long island is the best for sailing. nick

Grew up on Barnegat Bay

I grew up on Barnegat Bay. Your article brought a couple of things to mind- Barnegat Inlet can be very treacherous-I recommend Manasquan inlet if you have a choice to go outside. The bay itself has many broad flats up and down it. That being said, watch the channel! But I loved it then and still do! Now that I live in Florida,I still remember I learned on Barnegat bay!
