Just bought a nice 27 footer - with a hull of a lot of barnacles :-( I plan to pull it out and redo the bottom... How do you know when its time to scrap all hull paint off - or just sand and repaint? Thanks in advance!

Bottom Job

Ben, Congrats on the boat! When I got my C22 a few years back, the PO said the bottom was fine. Not that he was lying , but I thought the paint a little thick. He admitted to beaching the boat more than a few times and with all swing keel boat there was work to be done to the keel. Long story short, when I removed the keel for a complete re-do, I decided to strip the bottom. I thought this the only real way to know what shape the bottom was in and to look for any repairs that might be hidden by the paint. It was a bit of work but in the end all I found were a few water line blisters which were easy to fix and I have the peace of mind to know for sure how sound the hull and bottom really is. I also put a barrier coat on the hull and then an ablative bottom paint. When the grey shoes thru the red, time to paint again.

Sounds like the scraping is the way to go - as you say - then you know what you have...Thanks again
