Last month I noticed that my starboard side halyard winch on my 1985 O'day had become excessively tight. It doesn't turn freely like the port side winch. The only way to turn it is with the winch handle inserted. I took it off today and it took about 30 minutes of prying before I could get it off. I cleaned and regreased it and put it back together but nothing changed. Anyone have hany ideas what might have caused it? Will I have to replace the winch? Thanks in advance.

Richard - not sure which winch you have but I had a similar problem and my winches would not rotate. After consulting this web site and getting some advice I solved it this way ... My winch has a solid base which has a plastic core the drum rides on. 1) Dissassemble the winch 2) Use a length of sandpaper to sand the drum. I did this using a back and forth motion to "dress" the diameter. I used differnt grades finishing with 400 grit. 3) Lube the pawls and re-assemble. It appears that the plastic core absorbs moisture and swells. The sanding simply reduces that and stops the binding. I did this to both winches since one was "bound" and the other was getting increasingly difficult to turn. The winches have worked great since then with no problems. I was going to attach a manual I have but cannot see how to attach files to this reply so e-mail me and I will send you some Barient/Barlow manuals which I downloaded/copied some time ago. Hey guys, I have to tell you something about those winches because I had the same problem years ago with the winches binding up. The company in Connecticut that was supplying the fiber spools for the Barlow Winches, had received a shipment of inferior fiber that would cause the winch to bind up in the hot summer months. When the company finally found out about this they notified the O'Day Owner's Newsletter magazine, which was run by a guy who lived in Assonet Ma. at the time. I used to subscribe to newsletter, and this is where I found out about it. I don't remember the name of the company because it was very long ago, but they gave an address and they stated that if you had any problems with Barlow winches, you would only need to call or send them your name and address and they would send out some new fiber spools, free of charge. I called them and they shipped me two of these new spools and I had to install them myself. My mast winch never needed one, so I never replaced it. This goes way back to the late 1980s. You may be able to sand these fibers and make them work. The only guy that would have further knowledge of this would be Rudy Nickerson. I gave Rudy all my O'Day magazines including the free O'Day Newsletters that I used to receive from the O'Day factory years ago.
