winches
Lenny,Most winches come apart two ways. One is a phillips head screw inside the winch handle hole. Remove that screw then carefully lift with a slight twist the winch drum. The drum will come off exposing the pawls and bearing. I say carefully because 1 in ten times a spring loaded pawl decides to leave the work area as a projectile. Some have one set of pawls close to the base and some have two sets one at the base one set close to the top.I like to roll a towel as tall as the winch drum and wrap it loosely around the winch allowing the drum to slide through it so that if one of the pawls decides to leave it will hit the towel stopping it's progress in frustrating me. The barlow winchs are a bit hard to buy parts for so don't lose anything. The other way most winchs come apart are a snap ring setup around the outside ring of the winch handle hole. Carefully remove that and pull slowly with a twist upward as described before. Most of the insides are similar. Some have bearing and some don't, but they all have pawls. The bearing should be greased and the pawls oiled lightly.Do not use synthetic grease. I hope that if I have forgotten something that someone else will chime in.r.w.landau
