I have a 1977 Catalina 22 that is equipped with winches made by Barlow. There is no apparent model or serial number. I'd like to clean and lube these, but have no idea "what lies beneath". If have knowledge of or experience with this type of winch, please let me know the level of difficulty in opening these up. I'd also like to find a manufacturer address or schematic diagram of the workings. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

1. Don't Loose any of the little Pieces!

Peter: I lubed mine a few years ago, and if I remember correctly, it's not that big a deal. I have kept my winches covered when not in use, and they really don't seem to require much maintainence anymore. You should take some steps to assure that you don't drop any of the little pieces into the water, or into the grass if your boat is on land. I think that Barlow was from Australia, and may now be out of business. This could make getting replacement parts a real challenge. I really like the appearance of the Barlow winches, and think that they look better than any that are currently available. To take the winches apart, you remove the socket head cap screw that holds the drum onto the post with an Allen wrench. Then lift it off and look for the little pawls and springs. These little parts, and the inside of the drum are what I clean and lube. Special lubricants are sold for winches, but I probably just used some type of marine grease that I had on hand. If the winches are are covered, the grease won't wash out. Aldo

Barlow 15 maintainence

I just serviced my winches this season on Quality Time a 1980 C22. Mine are barlow 15's. i removed the winches from the boat and added backing plates. The service is very simple. there are three pawls, each with a small spring. Be careful when removing the pawls as the springs tend to fly. The only tool required was an allen wrench. Loosen the allen bolt in the top prior to removing the winch from the boat. I used marine grade bicycle bearing grease made by Park tools. My winches now work great.

Check out Photo Forum

I posted tear down information on the photo forum on a Barient winch, which is no longer made either. I would suggest taking it off the boat, taking it home and dissassembling it. You can review the post entitled "Barient Winch Overhaul" to see how it worked out on my winches. Not too hard if you have a little time. Best of Luck Rob
