Does anyone know how to take apart an old Barlow winch from an 1983 23 footer? I have removed the retaining ring, but the black composite internal seems as though it is glued to the metal housing. The other winch works fine. Thanks,

Winch Removal

Sometimes that black rubber base swells due to moisture and the winch gets stuck. I padded the deck area and used larges screw drivers and putty knives to pry it up. I also used pieces of wood to act like a fulcrum to help pry winch upwards. Just be careful of deck as sometimes you need to pry hard. Use a drill with a circular sanding pad to sand down the rubber base so that your winch will rotate with ease. Cheers

Better information

I am sorry I didn't explain my problem adequately. Although I had a hard time getting the winch off my boat, it is now on my workbench and I still cannot get the internal black composite part to rotate to make the winch rotate. I found a spare black composite piece on the boat when I bought it, so the prior owner must have created and or known of the problem. The internal center locking spring is out, but the winch will not function. Hope you can help. Thanks, CVP

I think

some one may have greased the composite barrel and it swelled. Also the release to take the winches apart on my 84 O-23 and a push button at the bottom of the hole for the winch handle. Check this link for diagrams.
