I went out for the first sail of the year a week ago and discovered that one of my two old barlow winches (#16) would barely turn. These were dissassembled and cleaned last season, about mid-season. Yesterday I went to take the winch apart, clean and re-grease. I found nothing that I thought should be causing it to bind up, and even after cleaning all the old grease off the base and inside of the drum, it was a very tight fit to get the parts back together, almost as if the drum shrunk or the base had expanded. FWIW, the weather was beautiful, mid 70's, so not a matter of quick temp change causing differential expansion. I finally took some 180 grit sandpaper to the base (made of some kind of composite plastic, I think) and got enough off of it that I could re-assemble it with sufficient play to work normally. This winch is 22 years old and in my five years of owning the boat, it is the first time I've experienced this problem. Any thoughts? Thanks!
