Many posts suggest Lewmar, Barient and all other "small" winches are cross compatible with the now defunct Barlow.

The debate over locking and non-locking is interesting, but does not answer the question of where to get either style, that will absolutely fit my 1976 Barlow-16 that was the OEM model winch on my C-22.

The one that came with the boat from the PO is a home-made unit of l=flat steel with two square-head nuts welded on a bolt that passes thru the handle and is welded in place.

I saw what appeared to be a locking, plastic, floating unit for around 20-bucks and thought they might fit - but no one has commented on cross compatibility, or a price that makes sense.

Anyone ?

Jack, I'm not sure Barlow's had such a unique design. The handle I have from the PO is nothing more than flat stock with a bolt run thru the end and two square nuts (like used on stovebolts) tacked together.

The lug appears simple enough: square stock welded to a handle. Simple to make IMO. I just need to go out in the snow and measure the hole/square dimensions. It could be the same as 1/2" drive ratchet wrench?

Barlow and Barient are the same or interchangeable for the most part. I use lewmar pawls and springs when refurbishing. There is a Barient spring kit that fits too. My '77 Catalina has 4 barlow two speeds.......very good quality by the way, all bronze.... and a standard winch handle fits the socket. It's an 8 point socket so a square peg will fit in the round hole.

The halyard winches on the cabin top are 2 speed Barlow 18's (note the "winchers"...a failed experiment, since removed ) The primary winches on the coaming are 2 speed Barlow 32's... the secondaries further aft were added later, they are single speed Lewmar 7's. The all use the same handles.

So Barlow, Barient and Lewmar winches all use the same handle configuration?

I know they come in various lengths. I guess my question is what did Catalina decide on for the 1976 22 as the OEM winch handle length - that was shipped with the OEM Barlow 16 winch?

Winch handle

The handle shown in your pics is apparently homemade, and not very well at that. Just buy any currently available winch handle, new or used, and it will fit. Also, they usually come in 8" or 10" lengths. You really don't need the extra leverage of the 10", and the 8" ones are slightly less expensive and easier to use for that winch and your boat.

Yeah, that winch is pretty "standard". Any aftermarket winch handle will fit it. I like the shorter "plastic" ones, with a locking handle, and having a bag full of handles, I just leave one in each winch. I DO have one of the old Barient bronze locking handles, and a large chrome Lewmar. But they weigh a ton. Or right at it..

Any standard winch handle will fit that winch......... the Rube Goldberg your previous owner built was an attempt to save money.... nothing else.

Good winch handles aren't cheap.... but nice to use. Get an 8" locking handle.... and move on to other concerns.
