I was doing some more cleaning / prepping on hte 1987 H23 I bought last fall and noticed that the winch on the mast has way too much friction. In fact it jams when turning clockwise. The winches are Barlow 15 single speed and are probably original equipment. Does anyone have a maintenance guide/info for these? I searched around on the web and it seems that Barlow is no longer in business. I haven't taken them apart yet so I'm not sure if they are merely in a serious need of cleaning / greasing or whether they are damaged. Anyone on the list still using these puppies or is it just time to pull out the wallet and buy some more modern winches?

Winch maintenace

Just take them apart and clean them.. Make sure to lubricate when putting thenm back together. Make sure not to loose the springs if I recall they have them.

Jams?

Hi Mike, When you say it jams, do you mean that the winch handle won't turn clockwise, or that the drum won't turn? ...Does the drum turn at all? --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' ...with the Barlow winches ;o)

Newer aint always any better

Joel, I've got the same winches on my 23 and had the same problem when I brought the boat home. A good disassemble and clean/lub brought them back to "as new" condition. The Barlow 15's are good, simple and strong. They're only weakness is a certin sensitivity to 8-12 years with out an occasional P/M. Greg H23 Faster-

Drum won't turn

If you turn the winch handle counter clockwise, it (the handle not the drum) spins as expected. If you turn the winch handle clockwise, it reaches a point (about half a turn) where neither the drum or the handle will move. The drum also cannot be turned by hand. I will be disassembling / cleaning / greasing them this weekend.

Another Winch Question

I pulled the Barlow 15s off this weekend and they definately do need a cleaning/greasing. I didn't find any springs inside. (I believe Dave C. thought there might be). What I did find is that on one of the 3 winches, if I tighten the top winch nut down, i.e., the nut inside where the winch handle goes, the winch cannot turn. The other two don't have this problem. Is this because the spring that is not there is missing? Does anyone out there have A Barlow 15 winch that they can look at to see if there is a spring inside? Thanks.
