Has anyone taken apart the Barient 21 self tailing winches for cleaning. If so what is the proper procedure and any special tricks to getting it apart? Thank you for any help.

Here is a link to a website that has diagrams/instructions for most all of the Barient/Barlow winches. I see that Barient 21's are included, but not a ST model. You might take a look instead at the Barient 19ST diagram because when I looked at the pdf file of the Barient catalog (also on the site), the picture and specs of the 21ST are a dead ringer for the 19ST, which I have one on my boat. The Barient 19ST instruction/diagram is on the list. One thing about my winch is that because of a retaining snap ring located at the very bottom, the winch can't be fully broken down without removal from the boat. The instructions, however, mention this and a work-around.

Disassembling and cleaning is not a huge project but you should be careful of the order of parts that are removed. I have dissembled and cleaned 3 of my 4 Barinet winches in an afternoon. I have found that once the parts are disassembled using liquid paraffin which is lamp oil to soak the parts and an acid brush to clean the parts works very well. Heating to oil until it is warm also aids in the cleaning process. Be cautious of not losing the small springs on the pawls since replacements will have to ordered from the AUSTRALIAN YACHT WINCH (SALES) PTY. LTD. in the land of down-under. The following link is a well written article on how to service Barient winches; http://www.arco-winches.com/products/service and a possible source for parts.

Have fun

When I take apart a winch I'll get a soda or beer box and cut a hole in the bottom the same diameter as the winch and place it over the winch and duct tape it all down so while I take it apart any parts that fall don't go too far.....I'll have to be creative when I do the mast winch's cause I've never done those (never use them but should look at them)

I have found replacement pawl springs for Barient/Barlow winches at West Marine. The Lewmar kits have pawls that may match up with the Barient/Barlows... but I've not tried them.
