Just took the cover off the boat - an O'Day 23 - and am starting the list of maintainence items. The small winches are difficult to rotate so I took one apart. Getting the drum off was "relatively" easy (just remove the spring ring on the top) but the base appears to be a solid plastic support. Am I missing soemthing here? Will be back on the boat this weekend - Have searched the archives and seen some previous discussion but not much. I'm looking for any insight/suggestions on how to maintain or improve the freedom of the winches? Thanks James

James, Your winch has no bearings but does have a swelling problem. The inner core sometimes swells with some types of grease. You may have to sand around your post to loosen things up. I have had o do this on boats I repaired. I don't' have written documentation why but through discussion have found that synthetic greases have bad affects on the Barients. About three years ago I tried looking for answers to this question and ended up sanding the post to relieve the stiff workings of the smaller barients. I hope someone has better info , but this is what I had to do. I must say that it did relieve the stiff action of the smaller Barient. r.w.landau

WINCH GREASE & OIL - There are special winch lubrications (ie: ''Bar-Lube', etc.), but I think any white lithium grease is also OK, if applied lightly. It sheds water and adheres to the components. Use it on the bearings - not on the springs/pawls. The pawls require a light oil to operate quickly so the winch can function properly. Grease on the pawls will make them stick. I hadn’t previously heard of the Barient “swelling” problem. Could this be why some advise NOT to use “Teflon” based greases? What part # is the "inner core" that swells (see link below)? I took mine apart on my O-23mkII put it back together still stiff. Took it apart and sanded with about 300 or 400 wet or dry cleaned and re lube worked fine since. Ed

Thank you for the comments and insight. All the commensta nd advice make sense so I plan to follow the advice and take apart, sand the main body of the winch, clean as suggested and then re-assemble. The boat is about a 40 minute drive from the house or I would have done it already. Will let you know how it works out. James
