The plastic line strippers in my Barient 23-11 winches need to be replaced (again). The last ones I purchased from the Australian supplier never did not fit properly -- the "tongue" of the stripper was too short and thus didn't fit deep enough into back of the stainless line lifter (which should prevent rotation of the stripper). Consequently the stripper ring rotates with the line, rather than staying in place.

Before I purchase another pair of stripper rings ($106), I'm thinking about how to make a part that I can screw onto the back of the lifter, and permanently eliminate the stripper ring.

Has anyone had a similar problem? And a solution or alternate ideas? Thanks.

I read about this company in a magazine at the doctor's last spring and saved it for future reference. http://www.emachineshop.com/. A few years ago, I needed a new gear to repair an old wind up infant swing. I used the rapid prototype machine at my company to make a new one in about an hour, but I did have the old stripped out one to work from. Maybe you can find someone with a working part and clone a new one for you. Just a matter of time before you'll be able fab one at home with your own 3d printer.

repair original line stripper

my line stripper broke ... I was able to repair it using a long nylon cable tie and some super glue. It seems that the outside perimeter of the stripper can handle the extra width .... it has held up for all the rest of this season ...but then again, you might not have your original broken one to fix.

Good luck

I decided to have a local machine shop make a pair of stripper rings out of aluminum. Cost more, but these should never wear out.

Since the machine shop can now make duplicates at a much lower price, and to make up for some of my own initial cost, if anyone wants to buy some of these rings we can come to a reasonable price (without the $30 shipping charge from Australia if you're in the USA). Photo of the aluminum part is attached.

Can you provide winch model(s) for which you had aluminium strippers made? I have 1992 Hunter Legend 37.5 with Barients for halyards and sheets. Four in all, all need line strippers. Also if you could estimate a price would be helpful.

Am located in US- Midwest

Re: Line strippers

I have a 1993 Legend 37.5. I had stripper rings made for the smaller winches (Barient 23-11) -- the ones for halyards. I don't think it would be difficult to scale up to make rings for the jib sheet winches #24-45 (I just didn't need those yet).
I'll talk to the machine shop for suggested price and delivery time.

I too have a 37.5 with a problematic halyard line stripper. I have had some success with flipping it upside down. But, I would be interested in repacements also.

The machine shop has given me a quotation. Even though I paid for the initial engineering design work, the price is still a bit high (I think) unless at least 3 more boat owners are interested. I will check around at other machine shops. If you want to contact me offline to discuss specific pricing, contact me at sailor375@gmail.com

Barient Line Strippers on their way

I have a toolmaker making a prototype for me to replace the line strippers on Barient winches. He has set it us on a C&C, so far making one in nylon. I'm thinking Delrin would be more durable. If there is an interest and a preferred material type let me know. I expect I will have them available in the next week or so. I expect pricing to be half or less of what they cost coming from Australia.

Delrin sounds like a good choice. Let me know pricing for any winch models that you have already got the pattern for.

I am working on a few options to get some made. I also got quotes from Hutton in Aus for about 200 bucks for 4 rings.

Will let you know what I find.
