Barient 2 speed 21ST issues?

One of my concerns noted in my survey of the E28 was play in the drums of the genny winches. I could grab the drum and rock it on the the shaft. The same for both winches. They (as with the rest of the winches) are pretty gummed up so it is hard to tell how this would affect their performance. Deducting the replacement cost from my offer would, I think, be just too much since I already have several necessary ones in the works.

This play is not normal - correct?

How much play is OK, how much is a concern?

problem is most likely the bearings

I have had several barients open over the years. some of the older ones had metal (bronze) rollers int the cages. later ones had delrin i think. plastic rollers. the plastic ones disintergrate rather quickly if not kept properly lubed. replacement bearings can be purchased from a co in australia. don't remember the name but i'm sure you could find them if you googled barient or replacement bearings for barient. they arn't very expensive as i recall. there are two roller bearings in each winch. certainly a lot cheaper than new winches.

there should be almost no side play in the drums.

Some other Barients have SS bearings which over time eat through the anodizing of the aluminum and destroy the bearing races. The smaller ones are not worth repairing. replacement is the best option for those.

If they are two speed.... try to repair them.... 2 speed self tailers are very expensive and I doubt any seller would tolerate that kind of price adjustment. Look at it this way, if the boat had been refitted with brand new primary winches would you pay an additional $2200 for it?

winch repairs

Ive got a 30+ year old pair of barlow #23 2 speed non self tailers I think the parts on most of these barient/ barlow winches are interchangable. All parts are bronze. I bought them used 7 or 8 years ago I cleaned them up and maintain them religeously. Im sure you can get replacement parts in Austrailia. I bought a service kit from them several years ago. Springs pawls etc: My winches work fine. No rocking. If they were mine I would attempt to get
replacement parts and rebuild them. A new set would cost you 2k+
