Need to service the winches, but the PO didn't have the tool to disassemble the thing. Anybody have any success in getting thins done without the tool?

made my own

Took a piece of 1-1/2" aluminum bar and drilled two holes to match the holes in the winch cap nut. Then I threaded two short machine bolts through and voila! Saved some dough, works like a charm.

Two screw drivers

Place two screw drivers into the holes and hold them parallel. Take a third "rod" and place perpendicilar between the to screw drivers and use it to twist them out. This also works on deck plates.

use your winch handle

Put the winch handle in the position and stick a good size screwdriver in to one of the holes and than crank it - in the right direction, and than you should be done. Don't forget to place a cardboard box under the winch to catch all parts that may want to go for a swim.... Good luck
