Barient 10p Winch Locking up

I have Barient 10p winches on my O'day 25. At the beginning of the season I had a problem with one of my winches. The problem I was having is that the winch drum would get locked up and could only be turned with the assistance of a winch handle.

I put a post up here a couple months ago trying to look for causes to this problem. I received good advice about inspecting the pawls and the springs as these could cause the issues I was having. I followed the advice and did not find anything out of the ordinary when disassembling the winches. I did note that the non-working winch was in the same condition as the working winch. I greased the winches up and reassembled them. This did not fix my problem.

So during the season, on hot days my winch would get locked up and could not be moved without a winch handle. But when the weather cooled down, I could rotate the winch with my hand with ease. Now, in 30 degree weather my winch is moving beautifully. It almost seems like the I.D. of the winch drum and the O.D. of the plastic base are out of tolerance when the components warm up. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? If so, how did you fix it?

Interesting question. I live in a less extreme climate so do not anticipate similar results. I do think you may be on the right path with the O.D./I.D. out of tolerance.

Could one of the fasteners be missing from the base to deck attachment, perhaps even as simple as improperly torqued?

If so, the missing or improperly torqued fastener could be causing an undesired strain on the plastic base during heat cycles. Just a stab in the dark from a newbie sailor with a little experience in expansion/contraction rates of materials. Perhaps someone who has first hand experience will chime in soon. Good luck.

You may be on the right track Craig. The dissimilar materials have different coeffiicents of expansion. The type of temperature extremes you're describing JD make this a prime candidate. A vernier or micrometer would be neccessary to measure the ID of the drums and OD of the hub. See what the difference is. It may be a simple fix by mounting one drum on the opposite so that the clearance is the same or closer from one to the other. Jibes is the guy to fully explain thermal expansion with his background in precision gauge making. And CP, if you would consider sending me that Oday 20 emblem I would love to make a mold of it to duplicate it.

Ya I agree that the expansion properties are to blame. I was just wondering if anyone else had run into this because it seems very strange. I was planning on mic'ing out both sets of I.D.'s and O.D.'s to see if I could find a dissimilar measurement. I didn't think of switching the drums, I will definitely give that a try. I think in the end I will probably have to take the drum to a machine shop I know to get its I.D. opened up a couple thousandths to help remedy this problem.

If I encounter a problem similar to yours I would bring the winch into the house after dis-assembly and let the drum and base come up to room temperature for 12 hours or so and take micrometer readings. Then place them in the freezer for 12 hours and mic them again and note the difference in measurements. Take the measurements in several locations to assure they are not slightly egg shaped too.

How do I remove a Barient 10P from the mast.

My winch has frozen up. How do I remove it from the CAL 35 mast? How do I remove the plastic from inside the winch handle opening in case there is a nut inside that must be removed.

How do I remove the winch from the mast? I suspect that there is a way to go in through the winch handle opening. How do I remove the plastic plug that I see inside the canal..
