Hunter 240 Aqualand Marina, Lake Lanier
A friend on the dock gave me his old Jib. It is not really old but he put a roller furling jib on this Catalina 25 and did not need the hank on one anymore. I was reluctant to try it as I have a Hunter 240 but it is great. I have gone from 108 sq. ft. to 152 sq. ft. It is now worth going out on the lake when the wind is only three to four mph. I knew that I would never get around to figuring out the spinnaker that came with the boat but this new jib is perfect for downwind. I had to run the sheets back to the spinnaker blocks on the stern rails because the clew is all the way back to the shrouds. I plan to replace the blocks with ones with cam cleats. It is not too much of a hassle to switch back and forth between the two as the sheets run to different blocks. I will get some pictures of her under sail.

The added square footage will add considerable forces to the rig; not a problem, but inspect all standing rigging. Seen a boat one time get dismasted as a fault in a shroud did not become evident until the working jib was replaced by a 150% Genoa.

The maximum for the hunter 240 jib is a 110. The focus was to put more power in the mainsail which is why the mainsail is bigger than standard size mainsail. If you take the total sail area of main and jib for a hunter 240, you have what is equivalent to a standard main and a135-140 Genoa.

In addition to Hunter, I was also a Catalina dealer who used to display the trailer sailboats at Annapolis as well and the only small boat dealer whom Frank Butler use to consult on upgrades and new small boats! I know the Catalina 25. The Catalina sail is too big for the Hunter 240!!!!! In addition leading the jib sheets too far backward, you will not be able to trim or come close into the wind when tacking.

For safety’s sake, don’t use that Catalina sail on your hunter 240. It is your boat, it’s your choice
