I'm considering chartering a bare boat monohull in Tahiti for a week or two. Anybody have any experience with this and/or suggestions?

Our kids recently chartered from Tahiti Yacht Charters which I think is a Sunsail affiliate. No personal experience but they said it was a good boat

I haven't bareboated down there, but I have sailed my own boat down there. The Society Islands run south east to north west, as do the trade winds. If you rent from Tahiti or Moorea and sail to the Isles Sous le Vent, as far as Bora Bora, you will almost certainly have a long miserable beat back to where you rented the boat from.
Though it probably will add some money to an already expensive boat rental, were I to rent a boat in French Polynesia, I would request a one way trip to Bora Bora, which would give me much more time to enjoy each island, because you don't have to plan your return trip past islands you've already visited.

Hi, chartered with Sunsail 2 years ago. 45 foot cat. Service was great and friendly crew at Sunsail.
Trip was excellent and friendly folks on every island.

Moorings/Sunsail, Dream and maybe others have their base on Raiatea, which is in the same lagoon as Taha'a. From there its a broad reach or downwind sail a few hours to Bora Bora, and an upwind slog to Huahine, which we skipped. We had no problem finding things to do among the other 3 islands on a week's charter.

Great list of names, Ed.
I may be heading to Tahiti in a week or so. Plans are still a little fluid. We are on Java, heading to Kerimunjawa Island today. Next we are looking at Bali (we may skip Bali for more time in our other destinations) and then Aukland, NZ before Tahiti. I doubt I'll have enough lead time to book a charter, but if there is a boat available, Tahiti looks like the best option. Many of these boats book out by months.

This thread is well timed for me.
