Croatia is worth the trip!

I worked in Europe for 5 years and took the opportunity to charter in Croatia for 1 week in 2000 in the middle part of the coast and 2 weeks in 2001 in the southern part of the coast. We returned home to Canada before we could do the Northern area. Croatia has 1000 islands along its coast - many are large with towns on them - dating back over 1000+ years. History is all around you. Dubrovnik and Trogir on the mainland are designated historical world heritage sites. There are many charter outfits all along the coast. The first year we chartered out of Biograd and the second year out of Trogir. As far as a home base goes, I would recommend Trogir - it is a world heritage site and it is a 5 minute walk from the charter boat base (several companies) to a walled city with a labrynth of narrow streets which allow only pedestrian traffic. However you may wish to choose a different base depending on where you are going - the coast is 100's of nautical miles long and certainly the centre and south hold a lot of interest - can't speak about the north as I haven't sailed there. You can see pictures of our trips at the link below. The picutres may give you an idea of what you might be interested in. You have to click through the menu until you get to my sailing pictures (Sailing tab). Note that these pictures were taken with my first digital camera back when removable memory was incredibly expensive so they are taken at 640x480. Most marinas are reasonably modern - docking is a bit different. Lines run out from the dock 60 or 70 feet to concrete anchors on the bottom - the lines hang down at the dock (seawall) and run along the bottom to these anchors - you dock stern to - once your stern is in, pick up the line(s) for your bow where they hang down at the dock at your stern and run foward to fasten them (it) to the bow cleat(s) - a tad tricky in windy weather until you crew is well trained. It becomes much easier with practice. I think Croatia is one of the best cruising areas in the world and I have been to a few. The waters are clear on the east side of the Adriatic and the lack of coral is more than balanced by the unique architecture, history and geography.

Cruising World ...

June 2006 had an extensive article about cruising Croatia's Dalmatian coast with nothing but good things to say. I'd hunt down a back issue.
