Bareboat Florida

Looking for help planning a Florida (keys?) bareboat trip in June for a family of 4 (boys 13,14). We have been to BVI (3x) but can't pull off the money for airfare this time. Questions: charter companies, type of boat, shallow water, snorkling, itineraries, temperature, bugs and anything else that I don't know to ask...Thanks

Treasure Harbor Marine

Bryan, Treasure Harbor Marine in Islamoroda has a fleet of boats for charter. I have not delt with these people myself so I can't say what kind of operation they run, but the web site looks good and the prices seem reasonable. Other Florida options

Try Southwest Florida Charters in Ft Myers or Sunsail in St Pete. Both have websites with loads of information. The Gulf Coast beaches are decent, particularly around Boca Grande, Sanibal Island and Captiva Island. There are lots of places to get off the boat and explore(the boys will like that). If you want a bit of offshore sailing, Key West or the Dry Tortugas are an overnight sail from Sanibel. It will be hot (low to mid 90's) and there will be afternoon thunderstorms. The winds will probably be light unless the seabreeze kicks in. If you can swing it, try May rather than June for better weather. Summer charter rates are usually half the winter rate and on top of that SW Florida Yachts often offers 10 days for the price of 7. Happy sailing.PeterH23 "Raven"

The "Key" is to be close

Bryan,I second the recommendation to try Florida Yacht Charter. They're at the Miami Beach Marina and, as the previous writer said, you're in the Keys soon after departing the marina. We chartered from them back in October and had a great time. There's a lot to see and do whether you go down the Intracoastal or outside.We also chartered from St. Pete on the west coast and agree that it is a long trip to get down to Key West.
