Bare lead revealed on keel

I used some stripper on my keel and left it on a little too long resulting in losing the barrier coating and revealing bare lead. Can I treat it with something to remove the oxidation without sanding it?

The only way I know of to remove the oxidation from lead and prepare it to recoat is to sand. Significant PPE is suggested. Oxidized iron can be converted and made stable enough, but I don’t think that’s true of lead. And the lead does need to be shiny for the primer to stick.

Thanks. I learned earlier that another way is to use West System epoxy to wet the surface and wire brush it shiny. The epoxy keeps the particles in suspension and seals it at the same time.
