Chris: You don't need all that many small lava rocks. They tend to drop down around the burner area and snug up to each other. Thats why they work so well as they hold the heat in as well as inhibit the air flowthrough. My hinged lid Magma model was s*** until I put in the rock. I think the rock will make all of propane units perform better.

Yep, I just scattered enough small/medium size rocks in between the screen and the grate to cover the flaming area. It made a profound difference. I still wish it would run a little cooler once in a while, but I can work with it now.

Ironically, this is probably the first grill I have ever owned that got hot ENOUGH for my liking. I like my steaks/burgers seared on the outside, bloody on the inside. This grill will do it with a vengeance.

By the way Deltaten, the reason I want my grill off the side of my boat is simple and has nothing to do with style points: the damn thing is on FIRE!! And if you grill like I do, the grease often flares up like a volcano, and sometimes drips out the bottom. Add immoderate alcohol consumption to that, and you've got the modern version of Greek fire. ;)

Dawg: Have you tried adjusting your regulator? If that doesn't help try restricting propane output with the tank valve knob. You can do it Duffy Moon! (Kermit is going to love that one!) Happy Holidays, Chief

Thanks Chief and Dawg. Groovy tip. There's no doubt that this thing will surely get hot, big time.

Been sailing for 20+years, liveaboard and cruising for 8 and have gone through many bbqs. So far the Dickinson SeaBQ has been thw best. Simple robust design and the best rail mount in the business. Been using for three years now and no problems with rust, operation, regulator. Really like the thick guage body. A few more $$ initially than Kumma and Magma, but will probably outlast them.

I just looked up Duffy Moon. I never knew what I was missing all these years. I found an episode where he turned a little kid into a frog!
