A Hartley South Seas - uniquely different from the water line up
Now our boat ain’t worth a lot of money, but she’s been ‘round the world. Bless her. And she’s sailed across the north Pacific too with snow falling on her decks; buried her masts underwater on that trip as well. Poor baby. She took that better than us, just as she did crossing the Great Australian Bight one frosty August when cargo ships were lost to sight and mile wide swells swept us off our feet. She’s a strong little lady, all 38 foot and 12 tonne of her.
Banyandah, meaning 'Home on the Water' was homebuilt in Sydney and launched in 1973. Jude and I then sailed off with our two sons, aged 2 and 3, never expecting we'd travel round Earth for the next 15 years.
Boat educating our boys while touring Earth's fascinating destinations proved rewarding for both, parents and children. We returned to land in time for their final two years of high school, they both then attended university while Judith and went to work to secure our future. Banyandah was craned from the sea and placed on our front lawn, where she stood for the next 18 years!
In that period, we gutted our lady. Everything came out; accommodation, machinery, electrics, plumbing - everything back to bare hull! Then we rebuilt her with a new rig and all new gear except for her faithful, rather long in the tooth, engine and gearbox.
When wrinkles and gray hairs met us in the mirror, when our grandchildren began to grow in numbers, we thought we'd better relaunch our veteran and try cruising once again.

Next, instead of sailing north again, we sailed south, back to Tasmania to look over the Bass Strait Islands and revisit Macquarie Harbour, entering Hell's Gate a second time. Three months later, the autumn chill sent us north to South Australia for our first ever visit. After touring both gulfs and outer islands we sailed back to Western Australia to spend Christmas with friends, then sailed a fourth time across the Great Southern Ocean, en-route to Tasmania, but the weather gods had other ideas.
Presently we are in Tasmania, the Apple Isle, refitting Banyandah for another stint of adventures.
