Banging my head on mast support

I am nearly bald and going back and forth under the mast support I
usually rip the skin off the top of my head sooner or later. I had a
boat once that had an oval door like submarine compartment doors. I
never ever hit my head on the top of the jam. I suspect the fact that
the top curves down to meet the sides gives an orientation as to where
the top of the jam is without having to look up. Does anyone have any
ideas other than rebuilding the companion way or wearing a hard hat.
Last week end I bled all over my pillow. I thought about padding it but
that only makes it lower???

HI I found a simple (temporary-emergency, turned permanent) way for me.. Cost about 2$.. Dark grey pipe foam wrap.. it's a split closed-cell flexible foam tube that you buy in maybe 4ft lengths.. and it has a external diamater of maybe 1 1/2 inch... Cut to length 20inches .. and open it and staple it up to the support.. Takes abut 3 minutes...
I will someday install it permanently but it's amazingly stayed on there with a few stanley staples for 5 months now.. and has save me seeing ****stars **** many times now..

Hi Steve and Doug,

I can attest to that - I am especially prone to hit my head on the mast support when I'm too lazy to take off the sun glasses in the cabin! But it may also have to do with the infamous sagging of said support - it's getting worse in my case (just the opposite to the optimal oval shape of the opening!) - soon I won't be able to close the door to the forepeak at all. Steve, if you can give me a quote on your mast support reenforcement kit, I would much appreciate it!

Everyone,

If you hang a ribbon from the middle of the door jamb it will catch your attention and you will duck. Or, as in my case, you can let your wires leading up the mast loop down for half a season and then tuck them away later and hit your head.

Hi all,

I velcroed a computer keyboard wrist support pad to the aft face of
the beam. It's just about the right size. It's not exactly a
pleasure to bang your head into it but it's a little better than the
bare wood. Probably the most effective part of this solution is the
pad's bright red colour.
