"Banging" centerboard on Rhodes 19

I recently bought a '77 Rhodes 19 in what I consider to be beautiful condition. Never sailed on a boat with a centerboard before, though, and when I lowered the CB for the first time while on a mooring, the board seemed to be loose inside the CB housing. The action of the water on the relatively stationary moored boat seemed to be banging the CB sideways inside the CB housing, so much so I could see the housing moving slightly in the cockpit. Don't know if this is normal and the forward motion of the boat while sailing will neutralize this, or if there is something broken or missing within the CB structure. I'm a new sailor and a bit leery about leaving my mooring for the first time! Might this movement of the CB inside the housing on a 23 yr old boat normal? HELP! - and THANKS!
