Hello All and thanks in advance for any help, I have a 30' Hunter that needs the dodger cover replaced. I'm sure some of you have done this lately and I would love some input on any special designs or features that you have had built in. I know that the cost of this type of project has a very wide range but please let me know what you think a good budget for a quality job would be. Thanks! Tim Lake Tahoe

Some clarity....

I just meant that my frame is SS and in great shape but the windows and material are shot. I just need the dodger - the frame. When the PO had my current dodger made he had them use a vinyl materal that shrunk over time pulling the zippers apart and making it impossible to snap all the snaps. The fabric is also crackeled and way beyond repair.

dodge it

You're talking about a sacrificial cover over the whole dodger, right? That's the best way to go. The dodger will stay new-looking far longer (a friend of mine has one on his, and his ten-year old dodger still looks new) I just got one for my new dodger (canvas only, the frame is the original) but the cover was included at no cost, but about fifteen years ago I had a cover made for a dodger on a C-30 I owned at the time. It was about 150 bucks. Made of Sunbrella. You want it to fasten down in at least four places and cover the whole dodger.

Nahhhh....but

..........but that is a GREAT idea. I need dodger replaced. I will be re-using my frame but need all the material re done. When I get my quote I will see about getting a sacraficial cover made as well. Makes sense. I'm trying to get an idea of how much to budget for a well made and designed dodger minus the frame. Thanks!

Replacement Dodger

Not sure but wouldn't think it's too expensive. Biggest expense for dodgers and biminis is the stainless steel frame. It's only a guess but I'd say less than a standard marine unit ($1000).

Sunbrell and a sewing palm

Some things I think are handy, pockets on the inside for "stuff" GPS when it is not being used, rope tails, anchor ball and steaming cone storage, emergency gear ..... the list goes on and on. Also loops to hang things with lanyards from. I particularly like to have a place to hang my spotlight as it has to have the line snaked up from the nav station and gets pretty hot after a few minutes use. Sunbrella is a breeze to sew and you can install all your own extras as needed or thought of. Sailrite.com has the fabric, hardware and the window material too. You could use the old dodger as a pattern.

A friend of mine

with a Pearson 28-II, sent his old dodger to IndyCanvas to have it replicated. Cost was around $500 which included new windows. When he received it, it didn't fit or even come close to fitting. He sent it back. He eventually got one that did fit, but he would not use IndyCanvas again. I'm told that Island Nautical Canvas (see link)does a good job of making replacement dodgers and biminis. You might ask them for an estimate. But if I were having this work done, I'd go to a local canvas shop or loft in order to make sure the final product fits. Local lofts would be glad to give you an estimate, too.

HAAA!!!!

hehehehehe!!!..... I had never heard that before "standard marine unit"...lol. Great idea about some pockets on the inside! Since my cover has shrunken and no longer fits I don't think sending it out to be duplicated would work. Tim

only one way....

call a few canvas companies and ask for a quote.... go to the source, any answer you get here is pure speculation. I got a quote for my C27 of 1300 bucks with aluminum frame.... another hundred for SS. What you'll have to do is send them the frame, or have them come to the boat. It might be cheaper to just get a whole new frame and canvas premade at the factory. But the point is, you'll never know till you contact a few manufacturers.
