I have a 73 Oday 22 with a shoal draft keel. Thing is, I can't find the ballast. There is a spyhole in the cabin floor to look into the keel and there dosnt seem to be anything in there. I heard Oday used encapsulated lead in their keels. I also hear that they used lead pellets for ballast. I tap all over the keel and everything seem hollow. If anyone has a 22 and knows what I'm suppose to be looking for, I would greatly appreciate your input.

keel stuff

The oday 22 (1974 stub keel) that I got a couple of years ago has a fiberglass covering over the space above the solid heavy part - this leaves an air space that sounds hollow - The reason that I know this is that I am in the middle of repairs on my hull - I had to remove the sole of the boat and reinforce the hull around the keel. The boat had water/freeze damage at the rear of the keel. I have read about boatowners adding lead shot to the keel to make the boat more stable and I could never figure out where they put it - until I started my project. I have decided to leave my keel weight alone - 600 lbs is enough for me - more weight would slow the boat down in light winds Algae
