Ballast Gasket

I just purchased a 1995 Hunter 26 and decided to change the ballast gasket. I ordered one from hunter and received it in the mail. I is ¼" thick and has some type of foam and has a smooth & a rough side. Does anyone know which side goes where?

The neophrene goes down on the fiberglass. In the future, go to an auto parts place and get some gasket material there. cheaper. Oh I bet Hunter will squack at me.

Ballast Gasket... What the heck is that?

Help, I have a 1998 Hunter 26 and have never even heard of a ballast gasket. I hate it when someone comes up with a part of the boat that I didn't know existed. Now I am wondering if this is something I need to check, and I don't know where to look. A little light on the subject would help me to sleep at night. TIA,JSetser

It's on the plug to the water ballast tank

Open the water ballast plug and crawl under the boat and feel around the plug that keeps the water in the ballast tank.

Thanks Frank, I was starting to wonder if it was a replacement that required removal the the cabin sole to repair. My boat sits on the trailer so inspecting this should be pretty easy. Thanks again.JSetser

Thanks for the help all I am sure I will have more questions in the future since this is new to me. FYI the gasket was only $5.00 from Hunter. I got both the gasket and top washer with shipping and handling for just over $10.00.
