I need to replace a ball valve thats threaded on a thru-hull. This is the intake for seawater to flush the head. When I try to unthread the valve, the threads on the thru hull started to turn also. Is there a trick to turn the valve of without turning the threads also? Thanks

What's happening is the thru hull is spinning. You need to hold it with a piece of bar stock or the handle of a cresent wrench or something jammed up in it while you unscrew the valve. (easiest with another person outside) I would highly encourage reseating the thru hull since the seal it had is probably no longer be there.

Special tool

there are slots on the outside of the through-hull that a tool can fit into. I had a machine shop make one for me that fit perfect. Wife was inside with the plumbers wrench and I was outside holding it still. Have to rebed though because they will move, even if it is a tiny bit. And why not....get to inspect the entire unit and ultimately can sleep better at night knowing its done right! I just replaced them all as they were 20+ years old and only cost a few bucks relatively speaking.

If you happen into a plumbing supply

store you may see a stepped tool for installing drain fittings that look an awful lot like through hulls. The boating industry didn't invent plumbing they just learned to use it. Now we must learn to find the tools in the places where they are most likely to be found.

A Thru Hull Step Wrench prevents the thru hull fitting from turning, while the interior nut is tightened. The manufacturers state: “NOT For Removal Of Old Thru-Hull Fittings.” Groco #THT-530 http://www.groco.net/ or Buck-Algonquin #38THW Series http://www.buckalgonquin.com/
