Crazy question.... what is the ball size for the hunter 170 trailer? if less than 2", why is this? Isn't 2" ball standard for all light weight trailers... except boats?
I learned the difference wben I drove across the state, on a tight schedule, to pick up my 170 from a dealer near closing time on a weekend. My hitch had a 1 7/8" ball from previous use with another trailer. I was surprised to discover that the 170's trailer required a 2" and that the dealer didn't have one in stock. I was lucky to find what I needed at a nearby U-Haul center.
Now I am confused... the previous owner states 1 7/8", and someone confirmed that size here on the forum... Hunter Marine replied with 2" plus a suggestion from this site. ok guys.... what is the answer?I'm laughing... wonder how many owners have a 1 7/8" ball in a 2" receiver....Sooooo.... What IS the final answer?Phil
Phil,My trailer is a 2002 Karavan Model KB-1250-50, and takes a 2" ball. Maybe Hunter has packaged 170s on trailers from other manufacturers, or with different specs -- I don't know. I do know that for safety, the ball size should match the receiver.
Last year I had the same confusion when I purchased a 146 brand new. Hunter said 1 7/8", but the dealer told me 2". Of course the dealer was right. It seems at one time Hunter used the smaller one as standard equipment but moved to the bigger one. Some of their documentation has not been updated.
The trailer that came with my 170 is a venture and the dealer told me 1-7/8 based on information from hunter, but when we inspected the trailer it was a 2".
I picked up my new 2005 170 last Saturday. It was on a new Venture trailer and it had a 2" ball. Even the Hunter guy at the show told me it would be 2". Maybe they're catching on.
