I was down in the Bahamas a couple years ago for the Luhrs Owner's Tournament and noticed that the Hunter Rendevous was going on about the same time. Does anyone know where I can get some information about this event? Also, I don't actually have a Hunter. Since I am in college the good old college budget only permits me to be able to afford a 1990 MacGregor 26S. It's a water ballasted boat very similar to the Hunter 260. Any thoughts whether a boat like this would even be capable of making it out to the Bahamas?

Yes of course you can sail to the Bahamas in a Mac 26S, several have and do.

Jamie, Consider yourself lucky! When I was in college, the budget did not allow for ANY boat. My first boat was also a MacGregor 26 which I liked very much. I moved to the Hunter 260 when I got married, since the ladies like a little more luxury. Neither is a "blue water" boat, but they both can go into shallow areas, like in the Bahamas and Delaware Bay, where others dare not venture. As for the Bahamas, I have dreamed of making the passage for some time and there are several discussions on the subject in the archives of this forum. The discussions run from very encouraging to warnings about all the bad things that can happen. Also, you can contact Bahamas Tourism. They sponsor flotillas, wherein you can sail in the company of other boats, which should make the passage safer. The greatest hazard is probably the weather. The flotilla won't go unless it is safe. Hope you can take the trip! Have fun! (Lake Wallenpaupack is not far from our home. We live 15 miles North of Allentown.) Ralph & Connie Regar S/V Shambala
