See the attached photo.

This is the sailing vessel Fair Winds which suffered a dismasting off Elizabeth Harbor at Georgetown, in the Bahamas on January 29, 2012. Reportedly no one was hurt and other vessels in the area were quick to arrive to assist.

This appears to be a mid-sized Hunter possibly a 36 or 33. There is no info available on the cause of the dismasting. As you can see by the photo the sea state was unremarkable at the time and winds were not excessive.

Does anyone here have additional knowledge regarding this incident and it's cause?

Looking at the picture, they appear to be towing the dingy with the topping lift, or maybe even the main halyard. Never a good idea, as it can bring down your mast. :naughty:

Obviously I assume that's not what happened. But it does kind of look that way.

There is not enough inforamtion at this time to figure out what may have occured but very loose rigging, no stainless steel cotter pins in the clevis pins, rusted stud attachement to the wires, etc could be a possibility but again not enough information to make a good determiination as to failure.
