I plan on crossing from Miami to Bimini in a few weeks and have been advised not to attempt it with any northerly part of the wind direction. This could pin me down for a week. Is there any safe wind speed...( say under 15) that this would be passable? Amy advice about this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Billy C.
You might now be in luck as the weather patterns in FL and the Bahamas are beginning to change. The 'trades' (easterlies) have just started to develop in the lower latitudes of the North Atlantic, high pressure is now forming out in the Atlantic - 'normal' weather patterns, at last.
For a 'good' crossing of the 'stream', you might want to listen on HF/SSB (4.045 mHz USB @ 630Hrs) to listen to the usual 'weather routers' .... DO NOT depend on NOAA when making a crossing of the gulfstream. All you need is a 'shortwave' ("yachtboy" or Sangean 909, etc.) receiver with 'sideband' capability .... and a good external antenna.
