We are planning a trip to the Bahamas around the 10 th of Jan. We will be trailering our boat to the Okeechobee then sailing to the East coast. Has anyone got any experience or ideas on where to start from and the best place to land. Thanks Pat

Hi Patricia. Sounds like you need a copy of our book "Cruising Endless Summer-Exumas". You can email us directly at remummah@worldnet.att.net about how we can get one to you. Susie and I have been to the Exumas (6 months) and the Abacos (2 months) aboard Endless Summer (Hunter 31). Where will you splash your boat near Okeehobee? Do you have your own trailer or is a boat mover going to trailer it for you? Is your boat a water ballast? To go to the Bahamas youmight consider splashing your boat in Ft Lauderdale or Miami instead of Okeechobee. Okeechobee would put you several days north of where you would probably want to leave from. Our boat is in Fort Lauderdale, and we are staying in Boynton Beach. To head for the Abacos you would probably want to leave from Fort Lauderdale, and if you want to go to Bimini you might consider leaving from the southern part of Biscayne Bay (Miami). Have you considered cruising around Biscayne Bay and the Keys for starters? We met "Debbie Ann" (a Hunter 25.5) in the Exumas that was from WI. Bahamas

We sailed from Fort Myers using the Okeechobee waterway. Make sure your boat is less than 48 feet in hight over water. Else a great trip. Take along mosquito repellant and also be ready to fight gnats in some spots, so you need fine mesh screens.The Bahamas are an absolute must. We only visited the Abacos, starting out from Lake Worth. We used The Cruising Guide To Abaco by Steve Dodge. Excellent information. Explains also approach to the Abacos. We stayed there for a month before crossing the Atlantic. The water is clear, wind is great (not too much or too little)and not too big waves. We had 6' draft. More would not be of great help, less is better. We had to wait for high tide to enter some spots, but that was fine. Have fun, and wait until huricane season is over!!!Werner Gysi
