I have a very strange problem. Twice now under different circumstances and separated by two seasons, I have shut down the diesel after running for some time, and when I went to re-start, once after the breeze died, the other time after sitting a week on the mooring, the starter would engage but not crank the engine at all. In each case, my mechanic found the cylinders full of water. In neither instance had I cranked for any length of time - indeed, the engine would not crank because the cylinders were already full.
Mechanic (new this year - first one retired) noted that the muffler is about 1/3 the size of what comes as standard Catalina equipment. He's not sure what my specific problem is, but suggests at least changing out the muffler to the standard size on the theory that increased capacity will be more forgiving of some water in the muffler. Then to figure out how it's getting in... So two questions: 1) has anyone experienced a similar problem, and how does this happen (OK, that's 2 Q's)?; and 2) does anyone know where to get a standard issue/OEM muffler for an 84 w/ a Universal MK25? Any suggestions very much appreciated.
