Just installed a new Raritan PHII on my boat. The manual recommends using Super Lube to lubricate the pump piston. My question is how to get the lubricant onto the piston seal? I was thinking instead to just put some vegetable oil in the head if I can't figure this out. Thanks for the help, Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

The stuff I use...

...is a head lubricant that is sold by West Marine. The instructions suggest adding it thru the bowl, pump several pumps to draw the lubricant in and them wait for 12 hours. Works great and I do it once a season. As far as veggie oil, many people recommend not to use it since it can gum up your system. I'm sure others will respond to this in the same way and give a better explanation.

Les: I believe that you can remove the pump handle and unscrew the top of the pump assy. to grease the pump. If you have the drawing of the head, you should be able to see the breakdown of the pump.

Go with the SuperLube

Anything you put through the toilet will only be temporary - very temporary. On my Jabsco, I just pop off the top of the manual pump, put a gob of Super Lube into the cylinder at the beginning of the year and I'm good to go (no pun intended) for the whole season.

Lubricating a PH II is very easy

However, you shouldn't need to do it for at least a year. To lubricate a PH II: Remove the air valve (part 1203W on the drawing). It's a little square flat nut that has a hole in it on the front of the pump housing that looks like it's molded into the housing, but actually unscrews. Stick the tube nozzle in the hole, give it healthy squirt, pump the head a few times to spread it all over the inside of the pump cylinder...clean the air valve and put it back. (If it leaks, wrap a little teflon tape around the threads). You're done for a year (maybe only 6 months if you use your boat year round). To lubricate a Jabsco manual: remove the two screws that hold the top of the pump on...lift off the top, pull up on the pump handle to raise the seals and o-rings...squirt SuperLube. Pump a few times...replace the cover. SuperLube is high quality teflon grease...and teflon grease is what's in all toilets when they leave the factory. It won't damage rubber, and won't just wash out in a few flushes the way anything poured down the toilet does...it lasts at least a full season...sometimes as long as two years, depending on how much the toilet is used. The best time to lube a toilet is in the fall, as part of winterizing, because it protects the rubber parts in the toilet from drying out. Follow the above directions for your toilet after you've pumped antifreeze through the system. Come spring, you won't have to lube again...you're good to go for the season. Btw...it's not the pump piston that needs lubrication, it's the pump cylinder wall. The piston never comes with it, only the rubber seals and o-rings around the piston do. Proper lubrication annually as PREVENTIVE maintenance--instead of waiting until the pump needs it--reduces seal and o-ring wear, protects the inside of the pump cylinder from scratches and scoring, and greatly extends the time between rebuilds. If you keep your new PH II properly lubed, it shouldn't need a rebuild kit for 5 years.
