Bad Weekend

It was one of those weekends! Started out on thursday, planned on an evening sail with some friends family and ours, I carpool 75 miles one way to and from work, so we left a little early (well more like not late). We got a flat tire about 1/2 way home, he didn't have air in the spare . We crawled to the exit and amazingly the spare held up until we were able to fill it.

Got home, loaded up the boat and got underway. As we were sailing, the wife mentions there is water coming in the boat, the hose to a thru hull at the waterline from the sink in the head was busted so water would come in when heeling in that direction.

Friday made some trips around to get hose etc to replace the busted hose. Was working on it sunday evening and the old thru hull just disintegrated while trying to remove the hose clamps. Was able to plug the hole and no water came in overnight.

This morning, took the trip to WM and got a thru hull replacement. Had to install it in the water, removing the old one was a challenge, but got it out. Wife put some weight on the other side of the boat to bring it out of the water, it got a little hectic with the kids up at the house, but I think I got it installed and hopefully enough 4200 on there, and hopefully it will cure alright partially underwater because I didn't have much choice, I really don't want to haul this year, but we'll see how things look.

We had hoped to get out more this weekend, but it just never happened, was kinda a bummer, but at least the boat is still floating.

What you had would be nothing more then an aggervation around my house. You will have to do much better in the future to join the "Bad Weekend" club.

Was the hose running straight to the through the hull with no valve? I was under the impression that the Cherubini Hunters for those years had an under the waterline through the hull with a 1 1/2 inch bronze gate valve between the through the hull fitting and the barb for the hose. With age those gate valves would fail and some owners opted to close and abandon the through the hull and install a new one just above the water line not requiring a valve. What material and size is your through the hull and can you tell if it has been repositioned? My curiosity stems from a possible design shift that Hunter may have had during those years pertaining to the sink through the hull. In any instance I'm glad that you were able to fix it even if it ruined your weekend.

i've got 4 through hulls left 1 for the galley ice box has valve and the sink,1 for the vanity/bilge pump in the head with valve and 2 for the cockpit drains

Yes, there is no valve. The through hull is pretty much right at the water line and with the thru hull in place water wouldn't come in due to the length of the barded part and the angle. Any heeling would put it below the waterline for sure though.

I was wondering the whole time why they wouldn't just install this a tiny bit higher. I was thinking about repositioning it when we haul next, but who knows, might not really be necessary I guess. My main concern now is that the 4200 was enough and that it cures alright wet and keeps water from getting into the core (it's really bothering me).

It definately wasn't repositioned, I would have noticed that as much time as I spent in the tiny cramped hard to reach area.

bad weekend`s

The last few years holiday weekends have been disappointing. Around MA bay cape ann anyway. Friday was the best of the 4 days Light air and cold. but sailable Saturday was Horrendus cold, foggy, overcast. Sunday was light air with big threatening thunder heads
everywhere. Monday was pleasant weather wise but there was 0 air all day. Of the 4 days
I got out on all of them. The only day free of annoying power boats was Fri

Mine is the same, it’s close to the waterline with no valve, which worries me. It’s great that you were able to replace it in the water (saved some $$). Great job. I hope everything works fine.
