Manny - Havre de Grace/Port Deposit always seems to get the worst of whatever heads across 95. The weather the past week and a half has been driving me crazy. Every afternoon it's been something, or the warnings of probable something. I'm Jonesing for a sail... :(

Soloed down to Georgetown yesterday (long commentary)...

all I had down there was a steady drizzle that began around dark and continued off and on until past when the band shut down at the Kitty Knight.

Today was another story! NOAH gave a warning for storms in the lower Susquehanna Valley and along the Md/Pa boarder, clearing off after 9am. Figuring to beat those forecast later for the afternoon, I left Georgetown around 9, expecting to get up to North East before the afternoon fun began. Boy, was I ever wrong. Heading out with me was a newer Hunter 33 named Windsong (home port Oxford), possibly out of HdG.

As I came up on Ordinary Point heading out, was hit by a line squall of rain that knocked visibility down to about a quarter mile. Made the turn and continued outbound, passing Red 2 some time after 10 am. Temp dropped by about 20 degrees. About halfway to Grove Point the NOAH alarm went off and they issued a severe thunderstorm warning for one over Aberdeen heading East, with high winds and intense lightning and an advisory to mariners to seek shelter immediately. At this point there was no where to hide as all sides were lee shores. BANG! A bolt hit over in Betterton and about deafened me!

It looked like it was clearing below Aberdeen so I thought I was going to get missed and it would pass to the north--wrong again. About a mile from the ship channel, where I noted a tug/barge heading north, another white water squall line came across the Bay. I had just enough time to throw on my rain gear jacket, put a way point west of Turkey Point into the GPS, hit the GoTo button and select highway on the menu before visibility dropped to less than a couple hundred yards due to the intense wind and rain--the proverbial deluge! I lost sight of Windsong at this point. Wind was in the 20's pretty steadily but the waves weren't more than about 2 to 3 feet due to the short fetch off the west shore.

I cleared the stern of the tug to cross the channel, and continued for almost an hour to cross the Bay toward Turkey Point. Constant surveillance found only one other boat out in this mess, and he was heading the opposite direction. Repeated deluges would block out visibility for minutes at a time. As I got within a mile of the Turkey Point waypoint, the wind lightened, the rain backed off, visibility improved to the point of several miles and growning. Wind became light and still on the nose all the way up to North East. By the time I docked the sun was out, but ominous clouds were still forming towards the Elk

As I was approaching NER Red 4, one of our club boats (a Farr 40) coming back from the Gov Cup merged into the channel ahead of me. Later conversation with him on the dock had him leaving Annapolis around 4:30am this morning and began hitting the storms off Baltimore. Waves weren't very high as they didn't have the fetch from a southerly wind (wind was west-east mostly). He did try sailing for a while but getting the headsail back down was extremely difficult. Didn't get a Gov Cup report though!

Weather radar would have been nice as one couldn't make out the ramifications of the NOAH forecast, statements, and warnings from the verbal dialog. With better information I might have waited things out until the storms passed. Without knowing what was following, this would have been gamble.

New S-1 autopilot performed almost perfectly. Tends to want to hunt a bit so may need to find what in the menus governs this and give it a tweak. Sometimes the boat wants to turn slightly after engaging but suspect this was due to high end crusing throttle setting causing some prop walk before the ap detected it.

Outstanding trip--wouldn't want to repeat it!

Dan, I was out in that storm today, but we only had 19 knots as we passed Thomas Point Light House around noon. We were going from West River/Galesville back to Annapolis. We caught the rain for maybe an hour. I sent the two crew below so they would be dry when they drove back to PA. The chartplotter and autopilot were a good thing to have, for sure.

Wow Dan - That storm this morning was something else. I was standing in my cockpit before it started checking out the sky when it hit suddenly. I was soaked head to toe and shivering by the time I got into the boat! So much lightning, it was coming down really close to the marina entrance, probably not even 50' away. Visibility was so bad at times I couldn't see the boat directly behind me. I couldn't even imagine being out in those conditions. I'd say it was the worst storm I've ever witnessed.

Manny...

it was even scarier on the water. Worst storm I've ever been through because it lasted so long. Thunder storms pass over--this one seemed forever.

Driving solo I had no one to give the command "Bring me my brown pants!" to.

Ron...

by noon where I was most of the worst had passed to the north and east. I was about an hour out of port by then, about a third of the way up the Elk Neck pennisula. The autopilot got a pretty good workout as I was hesitant to touch the wheel for very long because of all the lightning initially. Ultimately I figured I'd be a french fry anyway if the boat got struck as I was almost soaking wet even with the rain gear on.

Sounds like your pants almost turned brown by themselves?

But what a way to go! It beats sitting at the office and getting hit by a fatal spitball.

W rode it out at anchor in Worton creek on Friday. We dropped anchor a little before 2 pm and around 3:30 it started to rain. The rain increased for a while with lots of thunder and a few strikes you could see. than it all calmed down for about 30 mins when the wind and real heavy rain hit around 4. I'd say 40-50 mphs (didn't have wind instruments on - thought about it after-wards of course!). Anchor held fine. and we were intentionally tucked up near the shoreline for protection. Sunday morning another storm blew through thge area but it wasn't nearly has gusty as Friday.

Wooden Tillers rock!! in these condiitons. I also was loving the extra metal bimini lightning sheilding during the light show. I learned how to hove too and surf the big waves in my boat.

Mac & Shippy...

appreciate your affection for a wooden tiller but doubt if it would have made a difference as even under the bimini (Faraday metal cagework aside) it was like standing in a shower. My boat shoes were soaked and there was water sloshing around on the cockpit sole for a while (put the first two drop boards in to keep it from slopping into the cabin. A direct hit would have probably toasted me.

Shippy, be glad you were further down Bay. What came through Sunday morning was extremely intense without as much wind further north. Saw readings only into the mid 20's, but it was like being under a waterfall with the rain. And after such a decent but light winded Saturday...

We are on the edge of a thunder storm right now and it is raining in my neighbor's yard across the road but not in my yard. Lots of thunder and lightning and sunshine all at the same time.
