I have just developed a leak in my boat on the port side of my companionway. *o I removed my speed log and there is a lot of moisture on the inside of the deck side not the liner side above and below the display. It is very wet and the water entering is soaking the area below. I think the display leaks a bit but am wondering if there is any way for water to enter under the cover over the companionway or up in that area? Anyone had similar problems let me know please.

Bad Leak

Hi Steve, I had a similar problem, my fresh air vent on top of the companionway was leaking and the water found it's way down that far????Also water was wicking back from the aft edge of my non opening port. Cheers Bill Olah

How far forward is your air vent Bill?

I can feel the water on the outside (back) wall of the bulkhead but between the hull liner and the bulkhead. I can reach my hand up inside and don't feel any water on the liner side. Ps How is everyone at the Old PSSS? Say hi from Pat and myself. I presume your project boat is now racing and winning all the races. We are in the Mackinac-Little Current Race this year.

Possible leak source

I had a similar leak that had me totally baffled and frustrated. I spent months looking for the entry source. Finally, out of desperation, I removed the aluminum frame that is on both upper sides of the companionway that the hatch slides on and the U-shaped aluminum frame that seats the hatch boards. What I found was a deep crack in the fiberglass (probably from flexing) where the forward edge and starboard edge of the companionway meet. It was completely hidden as long as the aluminum frame was installed. There was a smaller crack on the corner on the port side. Water had been entering the cabin top through this crack and migrating all the way over to the fixed portlight on the starboard side. The water could probably migrate in a different direction on another model. I fixed it by using a dremel tool and routering out all the cracked fiberglass and rotting wooden core. I then used epoxy to fill there deep crevice that was left. I haven't had a drop of leak since. If you can't find any other source and you get desperate you might try this. It is a lot of work to remove hatch cover, then the sliding hatch, then the frames, clean off all the old caulk, recaulk and reinstall them. I did it alone but it would have been a lot easier and less messy for two people. Good luck with your leak. They are often a source of ongoing frustration. cheers, Martin Cole S/V ARES
