BAD DIESEL FUEL?

WHILE OUT THIS WEEKEND I RAN MY FUEL TANK TO ABOUT 1/4 FULL. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOOSE RPM'S SPORADICALLY AT HIGH RPM'S. IT CONTINUED TO FUNCTION FOR ANOTHER TWO HOURS THEN I TOPPED OFF THE TANK AND THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR. THE FUEL I WAS USING SAT IN THE TANK ALL WINTER. FILTERS HAVE LOW HOURS ON THEM FROM LAST SEASON. SHOULD I CHANGE THEM AGAIN? OR WAS THIS PROBLEM RELATED TO THE OLD GAS?

Pick up

Could be youir pick-up isn't on the bottom of the tank and your motion aallowed air to get into the fuel system. Keep extra filters with you and keep an eye on it.

Exhaust Elbow??

Hi Matt, My engine began to loose power on and off. Seemed to be best if I ran it no more than 3/4 throttle. Would recover if in netural at 1000 -1500 rpm or so then run OK for a while. Changed filters, fuel - no effect. Then did the valves - shop found an exhaust valve with slightly bent stem. Thought this was the problem - idle was much better but still would loose power like before. Then found the exhaust elbow was nearly fully blocked. Remotely possible the governor is the culprit - can rule out by running at full throttle in netural. Governor if working right will limit rpm to engine max. and with no load engine should have no problem getting to max rpm. My engine passed this check with the partial block exhaust elbow. Filters

Since you were running on the last 1/4 tank you may have picked up alot of junk from the bottom of the tank,since the problem seemed to go away with a full tank I would change out your primary fuel filter at least. Good Luck Jeff
