I've got a 1990 hunter 30 and the prop shaft strut snapped. I've been told that it looks like a bad cast because there was pink in the metal. Anybody else had this problem. It's a $2500 fix so this is one that hurts a bit.

Not!

I think a strut is about 200-250. The haul is about $500 in & out. New shaft about $100/ft installed. Have you shopped around?

Galvanic corrosion

Had the same problem at first haulout after I bought mine a few years ago. Several people advised that the red color was from galvanic action removing the manganese from the alloy. PO had not been good about zinc replacement on shaft. Cost me a second cutlass bearing because the first one went with the old strut when it was removed. Galvanic problem was noticed when they tightened the set screws that held the bearing in place. The base metal was cheezy and just fragmented when the screws were tightened. Since I've kept up with the zincs, I've had no further problem with the strut.

Had same issue ...

as Pat on my 35.5, galvanic corrosion ate away at the metal. I got new strut, new stainless steel shaft, new cutlass bearing, new 3 blade fixed prop, new PSS dripless log, all professionally installed for under $2500 just about this time last year. Insurance covered all but my $500 deductable. NEVER begin a journey on a Friday, especially if it's Friday the 13th.!!!

crab pot did mine in

I have a 1981 hunter 30. Crab pot line caused mine to crack at the v. I noticed a little redness. I bought one from Dahmer for 292.00. however I replaced it myself. lot of aggevation trying to get the shaft aligned thru the cutless. what an utter pain it was. strut was not exactly like the original. had to build out area where strut it mounted. finally got it. I know the yard would not have exercised the same finesse to get that baby right. saved myself bunch of money; insurance paid me. now i need to realign the engine. can't be that hard just need patience, perseverance and a crow bar.
