we got a 1981 22 foot catalina, and there is no split back stay, only the back stay wich seems like it will end up going to port or starbord to the tang wich is conected to the transom,so if the back stay has a wire coupled to it whareas the wire holds the boom,is this gona work, did this 22 sieries come with iether a splt back stay or a single stay conected to the transome on iether side of the track for the main sheet,,phew,,,,my fingers are tired all for now,hatnhopp@cs.com

my 81 C22

My 1981 C22 has a single backstay and although I have two mounts it is fastened to the starboard one. Right now I can't remember why I reattached to that one over the other. Maybe had something to do with the outboard on the port side. And I have the pigtail for the boom support as well. No problems with one backstay although one can dream of an adjustable split. Jake

Back Stay & Traveler Modification

I have a 1980 C22. Same backstay as yours. The stay anchor point almost pulled out of the top of the transom. The fiberglas was cracking & splitting open. I cut out a small top piece of the transom to get at the nut that holds the tang in place. Patched with epoxy putty & some packing. I installed 2 home made SS "U" shaped brackets that fit over top of the transom, 24" apart & are bolted through the transom. On top of these 2 brackets I bolted a 48" long 45 degree angle piece to which is bolted the traveler track & the backstay anchors. I haven't installed a split stay yet & probably won't. I have a 48" long traveler track which gives me a lot more range than any I have seen on this type boat. The previous owner had a piece of 2 X 6 bolted across the seats for mid boom sheeting.
