My 74 Cat27 is has a split/adjustable back stay. what is missing is the line/block set up to adjust the tension. the parts are present on the back stay (a ring conntected to pulleys on the stays) and the transom. a boom vang would work, or is there a special setup that I need? Thanks, Brian

backstay adjuster

The split backstays that I have seen on the 80s boats have two wheels that are about three inches apart and ride on the split backstay with a boom vang type block set up to move it up and down. I had a diagram I was going to send but it is too large. I was thinking about putting a split backstay in my 1974 27 could you tell me what was done to reinforce the corners where the new stay meets the hull? let me know if u have anymore questions or would like to see the diagram. West marine

I have a C30. But I just went to West Marine and bought a four part B & T, propably designed for a vang. It was $100 five or six years ago -- still works fine.

Backstay Vangs

You can get a great vang tackle at lowest possible cost from Garhauer. Reinforcing corners: you need to put a separate D shackle at the base of each backstay to handle the bottom of the vang on one side and the line on the other. Just loosen the backstays, take the cotter pin out and install a D shackle on each side.
