Hello all, I have a 1986 P36-2. Saterday, the wife and I dove on the bottom and scrubbed the growth....always a fun job! Anyway, on my way back onto the boat, I was looking at the chain plate that is attached on the transom for the backstay and noticed that the welds attaching the side supports to the top peice of the upper part had seperated with a gap of about 1/2 inch. This failure was hidden from view by the rub rail that hangs over the weld. Upon further inspection, the connecting peice that sits on the rub rail was angled almost perfectly with the backstay, when it should be pointing straight up. I am having this fixed this week from my welding friend that did my centerboard sheave and will be as good as new. But thank God I found this before the wind got the better of it! Just wanted everybody to know so you can inspect.....just look at the peice under the rub rail. I will take pictures tommarow when I remove it. Greg 1986 P36-2 Four the Soul

NY??

Why did you cut the rub rail away like that?? It certainly looks as if a socket wrench could have removed the nuts, and then the plate to have it welded with no permanent cosmetic damage?? It looks to me like you should have that plate reinforced at the least or have a new one custom made from heavier stock! Not only is it split at the welds but it's deformed from the tension. I would go up a size in stainless plate thickness..

A close look and that appears to have been

set below the plywood and when the nuts were tightened it stressed the weld. The plywood above seems to be compressed and distorted. The bend ought to be checked carefully for cracks before it is reinstalled. And yes it does seem to be rather light.

Rub Rail

I cut the rub rail as I could not get a socket up there.....the rail had pressed up against the bolts and with its age has become very hard and was not moving. Also, the way the plate was bent, it caused additional angle problems. I also have the new peice of rub rail for the transom that did not get put on last year when I did the rest of the boat in new rub rail, so this winter I will redo this peice. I am taking the peice to my welder today and will see what we can do in regards to beefing it up. Greg
