I'm installing a 10" chart plotter on my Catalina 25. I have wheel steering but am going to mount the chartplotter on the port side of the cockpit. Where can I get a piece of 4" x 6" or 4" x 8" thin stainless steel plate to use as a backing plate? Anyone have any ideas?

The chart plotter will be light and won't be subjected to stress, it doesn't really need a backing plate. Washers will be more than enough or just screw it into the fiberglass with self-tapping screws.

@Dave, I'm mounting a Humminbird Helix 10 on a RAM extended/long extension arm so I'll be at almost 2' and then the wind resistance and weight of the graph. I'd feel awhole lot more comfortable with a backing plate...

I was assuming you were using a flush mounted plotter, with the extension and the leverage a beefing up the mounting would be a good idea.

The problem with starboard for this application is that it is soft and the washer and nut will dig into the starboard. Something less susceptible to compression would be preferable.

What size mounting bolts? It might be reasonable to use double thick fender washers.
