This is a first time post and I hope I am in the right place. I have a Jabsco head and just replaced the joker valve because I was having a backflow issue. It seemed to be working ok but now the backflow problem has returned. Could it be the little vent cap at the top of the U line that needs to be replaced also? Thanks for any help. Danielle

Junk!

Danielle: Jabsco heads are basically junk. I know they are found on boats from $10,000 to 1,000,000 but they are not worth putting .05 worth of part and labor. Look at one of the Raritan heads. The Cricket or the PHII are great. When they wear out, they are worth your time, trouble & money to repair.

The toilet has nothing to do with backflow..

Neither does the air valve in a vented loop (what you called a "U line"). And a joker valve won't block slow seepage either...a brand new one might for a short time...but only till enough flushes have gone through it to stretch the slit a micromilimeter. Backflow is a matter of a very simple law of physics: liquids run downhill. So any flush water or waste that's left sitting in the head discharge hose between the toilet and the top of the loop is gonna end up back in the bowl. If there's any backPRESSURE--which a blocked tank vent will create--it'll end up back in the bowl a lot faster. So if you aren't having any problems flushing the toilet--if backflow is the only issue--there's nothing wrong with the toilet, only with the operator: you aren't flushing long enough in the dry mode to push everything in the bowl over the top of the loop. Jabsco toilets aren't the best, but even a Jabsco can push bowl contents up to 6' in the dry mode. If you feel increasing backpressure when you pump the toilet (assuming that you're pumping long for any backpressure to build), your tank vent may be partially or even totally blocked. So the solution to your problem is, flush longer in the dry mode and make sure you tank vent never becomes blocked...check it regularly...backflush it every time you pump out and/or wash the boat.
